Understanding the Connections Between Health, Belonging, and Equity
Health is more than access to medical care; it is shaped by the conditions in which people live, work, and build their lives. In 2024-2025, our programs supported the health and wellbeing of newcomers on the North Shore by focusing on the broader social determinants of health, including economic stability, social connection, and freedom from discrimination.
Our work is grounded in an understanding that health is deeply linked to social factors. Our 2024 client survey confirmed this: 56% of respondents said they have found it challenging to meet basic household expenses in the past year. Among these respondents, 70% also experienced isolation and loneliness in Canada and 75% experienced some level of stress, anxiety and/or depression they found difficult to cope with in the past year. 67% of newcomers who are working in a job that doesn’t align with their background, skills, or interests report experiencing some level of stress, anxiety, and/or depression that they felt difficult to cope with in the past year. These statistics illustrate the connection between economic stress, isolation, and struggles with mental health.
Whether someone connects with us through settlement, employment, school support, youth services, or English classes, they have the opportunity to receive relevant, timely, and culturally safe information on health and wellness. This year, 2,410+ im/migrants received information and support specifically focused on mental health, and 2,120 im/migrants received health-related information and referrals to connect them with the care they need.
By embedding health and wellness into our services, we support the whole person. We know that when newcomers have what they need to feel safe, secure, and included, their overall health improves. Our work this year reflects a deep commitment to community health.
At Impact North Shore, we’re not just helping individuals access services. We’re helping build the foundation for healthier, more connected lives.
