Over 360 people increased their understanding of how the concept of Canadian work experience (CWE) negatively affects both racialized im/migrants and employers in the labour market. Extensive research resulted in key recommendations for how employers can enable more equitable hiring practices.
An Employer Resource Toolkit was developed by the project and tested by a cohort of employers who confirmed that the toolkit is successful in suggesting multiple methods to reduce bias and utilized tools to assess the skills and experiences that newcomers bring to the Canadian labour market.
The Toolkit is divided into several sections covering the various stages of the hiring and onboarding process, with activities, reflection questions, resources, and strategies:
- Section 1: Working through Unconscious Bias discusses unconscious bias and strategies to address prejudices throughout the recruitment phase.
- Section 2: Hiring the Right Candidate explores equitable hiring practices in order to determine the right candidate for the role.
- Section 3: Equitable and Welcoming Workplaces offers strategies on how to create equitable workplaces.
