Building Belonging Through Partnership

For many newcomer seniors, arriving in Canada can be an isolating experience. Separated from familiar communities, language, and support networks, they often face the challenge of building a new life while feeling disconnected from the people and places around them. Even taking the first step into a community place can feel daunting.

Jenny Sun remembers that experience well, “When I came to Canada, I stood outside the Seniors Centre for a week in the rain before gathering my courage to come in and explore. I felt so shy and nervous.”

Recognizing these barriers, Impact North Shore and Silver Harbour Seniors Centre came together more than 20 years ago with a shared vision: to create opportunities for newcomer seniors to connect, learn, and belong. Guided by mutual respect and a commitment to supporting seniors, the two organizations combined their strengths to develop a Seniors Bridging Program that welcomed newcomers into a local community space.

The program offered English language learning, support in understanding life in Canada, and opportunities to meet others facing similar experiences. More importantly, it created a bridge between isolation and connection. By working together, Impact North Shore and Silver Harbour helped newcomer seniors navigate their new lives with connection, support, and a sense of belonging.

As relationships formed, the impact extended far beyond the original program. New members joined, long-term connections developed, and a strong community began to take shape. When one member experienced a lengthy hospital stay, the group organized regular visits, ensuring she remained connected and supported.

This group works together to enrich each other’s lives,” shared Fang Chen.

This group feels like home. It has helped me feel able to settle and build a new home here,” said Song Zhao.

More than two decades later, this community of seniors continues to thrive.

What began as a partnership between two organizations has evolved into a community sustained by the same spirit of collaboration that created it. By bringing together organizations, community spaces, and newcomer seniors, Impact North Shore and Silver Harbour built more than a program. They helped create a network of friendship, belonging, and mutual support that has continued to strengthen for over 20 years.
