Settlement is a complex and evolving process, and newcomers require different supports at different stages as they build their lives in Canada. By providing a continuum of integrated services that respond to individual and family needs, newcomers develop confidence, achieve independence and become active contributors in their community.
“I can give back to the community now,” Jaleh says as she reflects on her progress after losing her husband shortly after arriving in Canada. Jaleh shares the challenges of processing profound grief while adjusting to life in a new country. Today, Jaleh volunteers at the Vancouver Art Gallery and West Vancouver Art Gallery, where she shares her passion for art and teaches children. “I have learned that when a community gives you something, you take what you need, then you give it back.”
“When you come here, you are alone. But when there’s someone to support you, it’s beautiful,” Jaleh shares. She reflects on the many services she accessed at Impact North Shore, including ongoing guidance and support from staff, English classes that helped her build communication skills, and digital literacy workshops that helped her navigate technology and become more independent. Jaleh comments that along the way, she built friendships and personal connections, gradually developing a stronger sense of belonging in her community.
